Saving on vet costs

Good care does not have to cost a fortune. For exactly the same treatment you can pay over three times as much at one clinic as at another. Eight concrete ways to save — without cutting corners on care.

Eight tips that genuinely save money

1. Compare before you go

The biggest difference is which clinic you choose. From our own dataset: an annual dog vaccination costs around €26 at the cheapest clinics and around €93 at the most expensive — over three times as much for the same shot. Comparing takes five minutes, and it is exactly what this site is for.

2. Ask for a quote in advance

Ask what a treatment will cost before it happens, including anaesthesia, medication and the follow-up check. A decent clinic will simply give you an estimate. That prevents surprises and gives you room to look around if the amount is steep.

3. Prevention is the cheapest care

Keeping teeth, weight and parasites in order is far cheaper than treating the consequences. A dental cleaning is a fraction of extractions under anaesthesia; a pet at a healthy weight has fewer joint and diabetes problems; deworming and flea prevention avert expensive infections.

4. Consider insurance — deliberately

Pet insurance pays off mainly for large, unexpected costs (cruciate ligament, bloat, accidents), not for predictable yearly care. Check whether the premium fits your pet and your vet, and mind the excess and exclusions.

5. Big procedure? Get a second price

For procedures costing hundreds to thousands of euros, a second opinion — and a second quote — is completely normal. Prices for the same operation differ substantially between clinics, and sometimes there is a good alternative to the most expensive route.

6. Tight budget? Help exists

On a low income, many municipalities have support schemes: pet food banks help with food, and charities and some municipalities contribute to essential medical care for pets of owners on a small budget. Ask your municipality or a local pet food bank — asking early beats postponing care.

7. Share what you paid

On every clinic page you can anonymously share what you paid (“What did you pay?”). The more people do, the fairer and more current the comparison becomes for everyone — and the sharper clinics stay.

8. Avoid unnecessary emergencies

Emergency consultations in the evening, at night and at weekends quickly cost two to three times the normal rate. In doubt during the day? Call right away instead of waiting until the evening. In a real emergency: always go — waiting makes it more expensive and more dangerous.
